About US

Our Journey

2011–2012 | The Beginning

A small group of dedicated families began hosting Taraweeh prayers at the home of the late Liaqat Razzak (Al-Marhoom) in Vierlanden. These gatherings sparked the vision of establishing a permanent Islamic presence in Durbanville.

18 October 2013 | A Historic First

DIS organised the first Jumu’ah Salaah in Durbanville at the Durbanville Town Hall—an emotional milestone that marked the beginning of regular Islamic activities in the area.

March 2014 | Establishing the Society

The Durbanville Islamic Society was formally constituted under its Constitution with an elected Executive Committee. Its mission was to unite the Muslim community under one organisation dedicated to worship, education and community development.

2015 | A Permanent Home

DIS purchased its current property at 28 Tambotie Drive, Wellway Park East, establishing a Jamaat Khana that continues to serve as the Society’s home today. This provided a central venue for daily prayers, Madrasah and community programmes.

Growing Through Education

Over the years, DIS has developed a vibrant Islamic education programme, offering:

·  Children’s Madrasah

·  Youth Madrasah

·  Adult Islamic classes

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many educational programmes successfully transitioned to online learning, ensuring continued access to Islamic education.

Building for the Future

Recognising the continued growth of the Muslim community in Durbanville, DIS began pursuing land for a permanent Masjid and Islamic Centre. After years of planning, compliance and engagement with the City of Cape Town, the Society was awarded land in February 2021 to establish a purpose-built Masjid, Education and Community Centre.

Today

While we continue to operate from our Jamaat Khana, significant progress has been made towards our long-term vision. We are currently advancing the planning and approval processes for our Masjid and Islamic Centre.
